Greco guitars on eBay are a little easier to find than Goya guitars and these now vintage replica or knockoff guitars on eBay now have real collector status. Similar to the Goya guitar, these Japanese knockoff guitars were also apparently named for a painter, the Spanish (born in Crete, Greece) mannerist artist El Greco, but for no real reason other than the Goya brand probably, as guitars were not invented in his day and he never painted a guitarist.
Greco started making guitars in the early 1960's and stopped around 1989. By the early 1970's they were making good replicas of original Gibsons and Fenders. At first, they were not exact replicas, but around the mid 1970's they created some really hot knockoff guitars. Greco also cloned replica guitars similar to Gretsch, Rickenbacker, lbanez and Zemaiti. Demand for these older Greco guitars on eBay is increasing and they are becoming very rare. Most in demand appear to be the Super Real (only made in 1980) and the Mint Collection (1981-1990) with an amazing likeness to original Fenders and Gibson’s.
